About the South End

South End takes its name from South Boulevard, its main thoroughfare, and its location just south of Uptown. An area of light industry and cotton mills for much of its history, today its former industrial buildings and mills are loft condominiums, restaurants, breweries, shops, and offices. Charlotte's historic trolley also originates in the neighborhood.
Historic South End, often referred to simply as The Southend, is a neighborhood immediately south of Uptown in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Southend has its beginning in the 1850's with Charlotte's first railroad line, connecting the Queen City to Columbia and Charleston, SC. As time passed a thriving manufacturing community sprang up along the tracks, centered on the booming textile industry. The industrial area declined during the 1970's and 1980's, only to be revived in the early 1990s as restaurants, shops, and design-related industries discovered the old mills and warehouses. The Historic Charlotte Trolley Museum is located in the neighborhood, and the trolley line runs from Atherton Mill in South End to 9th Street uptown. The entire trolley line is currently under construction due to the light rail line project in Charlotte called 'Lynx'.
